TECHNOLOchicas is a collaborative project of the National Center for Women & IT (NCWIT) and Televisa Foundation designed to raise awareness among young Latinas and their families about opportunities and careers in technology.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that IT will be one of the fastest- growing sectors of the U.S. economy, adding nearly 1.4 million job openings by 2020. Over two- thirds of these jobs may go unfilled or sent offshore due to the insufficient pool of college graduates with computing-related degrees and skills. Our country’s global economic power and influence greatly depend on our innovation competitiveness.
Women, especially Latinas, represent a vastly untapped talent pool to fill this gap. Investing in Latinas – the fastest growing female population in the U.S. – and developing them as qualified technology workers and innovators is vital to any effort to build the next generation of technology workers.
